Chasing Wild Pigs reconceives hunting through the heuristic of ‘hunting worlds’ - ensembles of human and more-than-human actors, technologies, infrastructures, affects, legal and economic frames, and temporalities knitted together by recurring hunting practices. Rather than policing categories such as subsistence vs. sport or West vs. non-West, the volume treats those boundaries as produced in practice and asks how hunting both creates durable social-ecological orders and can also rupture them. The wild pig (in its wild, feral and domestic guises) is used as a comparative probe because its ecological and social plasticity reveals the infrastructures, ethical repertoires, governance pressures (from biosecurity to conservation), and affective registers that make animals more or less “huntable.” Drawing on a variety of approaches, Contributors combine ethnography with attention to infrastructures, disease regimes, governance, aesthetics and digital afterlives of hunts to address urgent contemporary themes. Some of the latter include zoonoses and biosecurity, eradication vs. stewardship, commodification and social media, and the changing political economies of rural life.
