An examination of the strategy and methods of U.S. cultural diplomacy in Greece from 1953 to 1973, situating them within the broader framework of postwar American hegemony. Its central focus is the U.S. effort to build “networks of influence” by identifying and engaging potential Greek political, economic, and intellectual leaders with the ideology of Americanism and its core values. Drawing on extensive primary sources—including the archives of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, the U.S. Information Agency, and multiple Presidential Archives—the book traces the development of U.S. propaganda campaigns as well as educational and cultural programs.
