Description

Bruno Frank’s "Lying as a Principle of Governance" ("Lüge als Staatsprinzip"), composed in 1939 during the author’s exile in California, was not published in German until 2024. Now translated by Andrew S. Gross, this edition also contains Frank’s “For the Love of Humanity” ("Von der Menschenliebe"), along with relevant letters from Thomas and Erika Mann, all of which appear in the German edition. A new introduction by Gross places Frank’s essays within historical and philosophical context, and extensive notes increase its accessibility to an English-language readership.

Andrew S. Gross is a professor of American literature at the University of Göttingen, vice president of the German Association of American Studies, and editor-in-chief of the New American Studies Journal. His book The Pound Reaction: Liberalism and Lyricism in Midcentury American Literature won the Rob Kroes award from the European Association of American Studies. Gross co-authored Comedy, Avant-Garde, Scandal: Remembering the Holocaust after the End of History and has edited special issues of The Wallace Stevens Journal and collections of essays on surveillance culture, cultures of American conservatism, and populism.

Andrew S.
