Berghahn Series

Studies in Public and Applied Anthropology

General Editors:
Paul Stoller, Professor of Anthropology at West Chester University of Pennsylvania
Fiona Murphy, Assistant Professor in Refugee & Intercultural Studies, School of Applied Language & Intercultural Studies (SALIS), Dublin City University

This series explores the expanding terrain of public, applied and creative anthropology—a field animated by the belief that anthropological knowledge can shape and be shaped by the world beyond the academy. The books in this series reflect the diverse ways anthropologists engage with public life: through policy and advocacy/activism, collaboration and critique, co-creation, creativity and transformation.

We welcome work that is intellectually rigorous and widely accessible—linguistically, structurally, and politically. We encourage writing that is thoughtful, imaginative, and attentive to multiple modes of expression, broadening how anthropological insights circulate and resonate across varied publics.

Rather than treat theory and application as opposites, the series invites books that dwell in the overlaps—where public, applied, and creative anthropologies generate both critical understanding and radical care. These works may challenge conventional genres, but always with a view toward making anthropology matter in the world
