Soon after they were launched, I became fascinated by gender swap phone apps. How could I upload a male face, apply a filter and instantly perceive it as female, or vice versa? My preconscious mind seemed to grasp the difference between (cisgender) male and female faces, yet I couldn’t articulate what my instincts so effortlessly understood. With a little research, I discovered a set of general rules: male foreheads are typically broader and higher; men tend to have wider, heavier jaws and deeper-set eyes. Female eyebrows are usually more arched, their noses narrower and shorter, and their cheekbones rounder and more prominent. Women also tend to have fuller lips, which sit closer to the base of the nose (AriaMedTour 2022).
This brief example illustrates a larger point: our aesthetic experiences are continually shaped by details we may not consciously register. The same is true of all our senses. You don’t need to be a musician to enjoy music or a painter to appreciate a canvas, but a deeper awareness of the elements at play sharpens appreciation. With practice, we can train ourselves to taste food like a gourmand, hear music like a composer or see paintings like an artist. This book invites a similar attentiveness to animation: to recognise how a film moves, why it looks the way it does and why it sounds the way it sounds.
The following chapters are designed to map out some of the predominant aesthetic features of animation and offer clear, accessible ways to understand and appreciate them. It develops a historically informed account of how stylistic choices emerge, function and evolve within specific industrial, technological and cultural contexts. Along the way, it introduces new terms and conceptual tools to describe elements of animated form and style that have often gone unnamed or undervalued, particularly within commercial animation. This is not a how-to guide – several of those already exist.1 But it may nonetheless be useful to practitioners. By outlining historical contexts, condensing key ideas from production manuals and naming previously unarticulated concepts, the book provides a vocabulary for deepening both critical and creative engagement with the medium.
Unlike practitioner texts, which present ideals for how animation should be made, this book examines how it has been made, in different places and at different times. It takes changes in animation form and style as given, and reasons backwards to the contextual, industrial and creative factors that produced them. In doing so, it engages with how-to guides not as prescriptive gospels but as cultural and technical artefacts, critically considering how their principles have shaped the language and aesthetics of animation.
One of the central interventions of this book is to challenge common assumptions about what constitutes artistic merit in animation. For example, it reconsiders the aesthetic status of limited animation, reassesses the authority of the Twelve Principles of Animation, questions dominant models of animated performance, and interrogates the prescriptive frameworks that govern character design. The book also introduces new terminology where existing language proves insufficient. This is a deliberate attempt to sharpen and expand the critical vocabulary of animation studies, so that our terms more accurately reflect the diverse techniques, strategies and stylistic logics found across production practices. Concepts such as axial performance, microgestural performance, zip-crash sound design and poetic authentication will be proposed to address gaps in the current discourse on animation aesthetics. In addition, industry terms like tweening, cel-shading and sakuga – generally unfamiliar outside professional contexts – will be explained. The book will also engage with influential concepts introduced by other scholars who are engaged with animation, such as Maureen Furniss’s mimesis–abstraction scale and Donald Crafton’s distinction between figurative and embodied performance.
To this end, the methodology applied here is poetics. As a research programme, poetics investigates how artworks achieve their effects – what devices are used, how they are structured and what functions they serve. It seeks to uncover the implicit rules and principles that organise works of art, showing how formal choices shape meaning, affect and aesthetic experience. This emphasis on form stands in contrast to more familiar hermeneutic approaches in film and animation studies, which ask what a text means or how it impacts society (Mittell 2015: 5).
As used in this book, poetics refers to the study of how animated works are constructed and how their formal organisation produces particular aesthetic, emotional and cognitive effects. This sense of the term follows the formal-constructive tradition established by Aristotle and later rearticulated by modern theorists of art and aesthetics. It treats artistic form as something to be explained, an assemblage of devices, constraints and strategies that achieve expressive ends, rather than something to be decoded or interpreted. The present study aligns with those who see poetics as an inquiry into artistic making: how style and structure arise, how they function and how they evolve within historical and technological contexts.
Aristotle’s Poetics, composed in the fourth century bce, is the foundational work from which Western poetics emerges. In this treatise, Aristotle analysed the principles of classical Greek tragedy, attending to formal elements such as plot, character, spectacle and song (Aristotle 2013). Although only parts of the text survived antiquity, Poetics remained influential through medieval and Renaissance scholarship. Commentators such as Avicenna and Averroes transmitted Aristotle’s ideas within the Arabic philosophical tradition, and later humanist translators and critics reintroduced and reinterpreted the treatise within new literary and artistic frameworks (Brazeau 2020: 4–5).
In the modern era, poetics has come to denote a variety of approaches to artistic analysis. Igor Stravinsky (Poetics of Music in the Form of Six Lessons, [1942] 2014) and Tzvetan Todorov (The Poetics of Prose, 1977) retain something close to Aristotle’s original sense of the term: the study of how artworks are made and how their formal organisation produces aesthetic effects. This formal-constructive poetics treats art as a system of relations, rules and conventions – an object of explanation rather than interpretation. By contrast, Gaston Bachelard’s The Poetics of Space ([1958] 2014) represents a different tradition: a phenomenological poetics concerned with the imaginative and affective experience of space. His aim was not to analyse formal structures but to describe how poetic imagery evokes intimacy, reverie and memory.
Film scholars have generally followed the formal-constructive path. Just as Aristotle examined how tragedy achieved its effects, they have sought to explain how cinematic choices in form and style generate particular viewer responses, and how such choices consolidate into conventions over time. Early versions of this approach appear in the work of the Russian Formalists of the 1920s, whose collection The Poetics of Cinema (Eikhenbaum [1927] 1982) analysed the devices and techniques through which films produced aesthetic effects. Later, David Bordwell and Kristin Thompson picked up this tradition. Foundational works such as Bordwell’s Narration in the Fiction Film (1985) and Making Meaning (1989), together with Thompson’s Eisenstein’s Ivan the Terrible (1981) and Breaking the Glass Armor (1988), established this perspective. In Poetics of Cinema (2007: 12), Bordwell explains:
Poetics derives from the Greek word poiesis, or active making. The poetics of any artistic medium studies the finished work as the result of a process of construction – a process that includes a craft component (such as rules of thumb), the more general principles according to which the work is composed, and its functions, effects, and uses. Any inquiry into the fundamental principles by which artifacts in any representational medium are constructed, and the effects that flow from those principles, can fall within the domain of poetics.
This was also developed into what they termed a historical poetics of cinema, ‘the effort to understand how artworks assume certain forms within a period or across periods’ (ibid.: 13). Unlike earlier formalists who treated films in isolation from their circumstances, historical poetics investigates how formal choices are shaped by history, technology and industry while still analysing films as constructed systems. Bordwell’s On the History of Film Style (1997), for example, provided a framework for tracing how stylistic systems arise, persist and transform under technological, industrial and artistic pressures.
My approach adapts historical poetics for the study of animation. I treat films as networks of interrelated parts that work together to produce effects on the viewer, but I apply this method to a medium that makes especially clear the principles poetics seeks to analyse: how devices function, how constraints generate style and how norms are established, revised or overturned. The book examines the formal strategies visible on-screen and traces how specific solutions arose, developed and transformed amid shifting industrial, technological, economic and cultural contexts.
This approach is especially apt for animation because the shaping hand of the artist is present in every detail. Movement, design, performance, lighting and sound are never incidental; they are authored parameters at every stage of the pipeline. That visibility turns animation into a clear laboratory for poetics: we can watch how constraints become style, how tools invite certain solutions, how studios stabilise house looks and how artists negotiate, refine or overturn those norms. A historical poetics of animation, therefore, seeks explanation rather than description. It traces how choices are motivated, how they function on-screen and how they generalise across cases.
This focus complements hermeneutic or culturally interpretive work. It asks first how a work functions, before considering what ideologies it might advance. The aim is to build claims precise enough to travel across titles, studios and periods, yet modest enough to be revised by new evidence. The goal is not a recipe for ‘good’ animation, nor a compendium of production trivia, but a set of causal accounts that connect (a) the problems animators faced, (b) the options available under particular conditions, (c) the solutions they selected and (d) the aesthetic pay-offs those solutions delivered.
To date, there has been no lengthy analysis of animation through the lens of historical poetics. The closest is Maureen Furniss’s Art in Motion: Animation Aesthetics (which features chapters on mise-en-scène, sound, full and limited animation, and digital interventions), although Furniss never refers to her work as such. She does, however, allude to the same idea, commenting, ‘to fully understand the aesthetics of a single artwork or a group of works, it is necessary to know something about the production context – the historical, economic, social, technological, industrial and other influences upon any work at the time of its making’ (2008: 7). Donald Crafton also alludes to the close relationship between context and aesthetics in his discussion of animation’s formative years:
In only about twenty years the tools of the trade had gone from filmed ink, paper, chalk, and clay to high-tech equipment that sped up the labor of image rendering (notably the refinement of the cel process) and the replication of drawings (through the use of assembly-lines and sophisticated aids to drawing and by streamlining the drawing-to-film photographic processes). These new tools enabled work to be completed according to a tight schedule and on a restricted budget. (Crafton 2013: 150–51)
While this book is indebted to the foundational contributions of Furniss and Crafton, its scope and method take a different direction. Art in Motion offers a seminal account of animation aesthetics and production contexts, while Crafton provides a richly detailed industrial history. Building on these achievements, Poetics of Animation develops a methodology that more explicitly links context, form and function, and introduces new terminology to describe aesthetic strategies and problem–solution patterns that have received limited attention in existing scholarship. In this way, the book extends earlier work while offering a new analytical framework for understanding animation as a dynamic, historically situated art form.
Live-action cinema and television have received sustained critical attention within the field of poetics (see Bordwell 2007; Cavendish 2013; Mittell 2015; Çağlayan 2018), but animation has, by contrast, only been addressed peripherally. While animation and live-action filmmaking share a common formal language through shot composition, editing, colour, sound design and the like, important distinctions between the two remain underexplored. This book seeks to address that gap, positioning itself as an animation-focused counterpart to David Bordwell and Kristin Thompson’s Film Art: An Introduction (first published in 1979 and now in its fourteenth edition), a pedagogical distillation of their broader project: offering a systematic analysis of film construction with particular emphasis on form, style and narrative technique. Like Film Art, this volume offers a structured approach, while attending specifically to the affinities and divergences between animation and live-action media.
Some conditions that shape animation aesthetics are the same as those shaping live action. For example, was it made at a large studio or by a self-funded independent animator? Was it made in Europe, Asia, America or elsewhere? Was it made in the 1920s, 1960s or 2000s? If it was made in a studio, what were the prevailing conventions? Were the censors stringent or permissive? Is it a feature film, a theatrical short, a television episode or a YouTube video? Other shifting conditions are unique to animation, such as whether it is made with cels, clay, on a computer or by some other means. Technology also plays a distinct role in animation; whether it’s the development of cel animation in the 1910s, the invention of the multiplane camera in the 1930s or studios beginning to adopt computers into their workflow in the 1980s. Animator John Lasseter comments:
The art challenges the technology and the technology inspires the art. Technical artists are coming from computer graphic schools, and learning sculpture, drawing and painting, and traditional artists are learning more about technology. The more we get their cross-pollination the more we will stretch the boundaries of this medium. (Lasseter, quoted in Wells 2006: 6)
Given the scope of this topic, not all types of animation will be covered. Much of the discussion will focus on classic American animation, since it has, in J. P. Telotte’s words, produced ‘a number of the key developments in the form, has for much of its history dominated the international animation scene, and, for better or worse, has colonized the consciousness of both audiences and animators worldwide’ (2010: 3). Reference will be made outside of the American industry where appropriate. With its distinctive aesthetic and popularity, anime will be discussed, as will historically significant figures such as the French artist Émile Cohl and the Croatian studio Zagreb Film. However, while much of the discussion will revolve around American studios, such as the Bray Studio, Fleischer Studio, Disney, Warner Bros., MGM, Filmation, Pixar and DreamWorks, none of this is meant to discount the importance of the animation industries in Europe, Eastern Europe, Russia, the Middle East or Africa.
A consistent set of historical periods will be referenced across this book, with each chapter examining them from different aesthetic dimensions. The earliest period features pre-cinematic optical devices, such as the thaumatrope, phenakistoscope and zoetrope. Then come the earliest pioneers of animation who worked in an independent, artisanal mode: James Stuart Blackton, Émile Cohl and Winsor McCay. The following stage is the early studio period of the 1910s–20s, represented by Bray Studio, Barré Studio, Pat Sullivan Studio and Fleischer Studios. The next era, as cast here, is the period of rubber-hose animation, which ran from about the mid-1920s to the mid-1930s, with influential contributions from Fleischer Studios, Ub Iwerks Studio and Van Beuren Studios. Running alongside this was Disney’s own intensive developmental phase from the late 1920s to the late 1930s, during which the studio moved beyond rubber-hose conventions to pioneer a new level of technical refinement, narrative ambition and feature-length production.
Next, there is the Golden Age (as it is sometimes known) of seven-minute animated shorts produced in the 1940s and 1950s at Warner Bros., MGM, Paramount Pictures, Columbia Pictures, Universal Pictures and 20th Century Fox (Warner Bros. and MGM will receive the most attention). Then, there is the transition to television production, which took place in the late 1950s with Hanna-Barbera Productions, Jay Ward Productions and Filmation Associates. The final period marks the adoption of digital technology in the animation production pipeline, starting with 2D animation in the 1980s with the CAPS system developed at Disney. While 3D computer animation existed as far back as the 1960s (Dreher 2013), it quickly gained momentum in the commercial field after Pixar released Toy Story (1995).
In practice, the history of animation isn’t as simple as this account suggests. Periods overlap, and there are exceptions, fringe cases and artists who are receiving less critical attention, such as Disney’s movie output during the 1970s–80s.2 But at the risk of historical reductionism, these periods are marked as moments of significant aesthetic shifts. Most critical attention will be directed at 2D animation (cel and computer3), but 3D computer animation will also be discussed. Stop-motion will receive less attention only because it deserves a more complete and narrowly focused analysis, although it will be mentioned as a point of comparison to other animation techniques.
This book advances three central arguments that run throughout its chapters. Together, they frame a historically grounded poetics of animation that balances synthesis with original intervention, connecting industrial, technological and aesthetic contexts to the evolving language of the medium:
The interplay between production and reception is a central focus in this analysis. Concepts will be advanced to describe the aesthetic choices made by practitioners, whether those choices are intentional or emerge organically from technological, industrial or stylistic constraints. At the same time, the book investigates how these choices are perceived, processed and interpreted by audiences, drawing on cognitive science to illuminate the mechanisms of attention, emotion and meaning-making. In this way, the book bridges the space between the design of animated works and their reception, offering insights valuable both for understanding how animation is crafted and how it is experienced, appreciated and analysed.
Incorporating cognitive science into a poetics of animation allows for an empirically informed account of how audiences perceive, process and respond to animated works. While poetics traditionally examines how formal choices in style, structure and technique generate meaning and affect, cognitive research clarifies the underlying mechanisms that make these choices intelligible and compelling. Studies such as Fritz Heider and Marianne Simmel’s (1944) classic experiment, in which viewers projected intentionality and social narratives onto simple moving shapes, reveal our innate propensity to attribute agency even to abstract motion, a propensity that animators continually exploit (see Chapter 3). Similarly, research into facial expressions, such as Paul Ekman and Wallace V. Friesen’s development of the Facial Action Coding System (1978), has informed animation practice by explaining how subtle muscular interactions communicate universal social cues (Chapter 3). The Kiki/Bouba effect (Köhler 1929; Ramachandran and Hubbard 2001), which demonstrates cross-modal links between sounds and shapes, offers further insight into how shape language can tap into biologically rooted associations and enrich character design (Chapter 6). These empirical insights deepen our understanding of how stylised imagery remains coherent and emotionally engaging, even in worlds far removed from photographic realism.
Cognitive approaches also help explain the perceptual and narrative strategies that make animation effective. Research on perceptual fluency (Grodal 2019) and developmental psychology (Ildirar Kirbas and Smith 2019) illuminates why simplification and exaggeration aid comprehension, particularly for younger viewers, and why neotenous traits reliably trigger nurturing responses (Lorenz 1943; Gould 1980; Etcoff 2000), as discussed in Chapter 6. Eye-tracking studies, such as those conducted by the DIEM Project (2010), empirically confirm layout artists’ intuitive understanding of attentional guidance, demonstrating how lighting, colour, movement and focal composition direct the viewer’s gaze (Chapter 7). Colour psychology similarly explains audience responses, from children’s innate preference for saturated hues (Brunick and Cutting 2014) to the calming effect of Takahata’s subdued palette in My Neighbours the Yamadas (1999) or the disorienting saturation of The Midnight Gospel (2020) (Chapter 8). Narrative comprehension research, particularly Bordwell’s (1985) account of active spectatorship, clarifies how viewers build story coherence through non-conscious inference (Chapter 9), while studies of the uncanny valley (Mori [1970] 2012; Bode 2018) reveal the biological and psychological factors underpinning discomfort with hyper-realist designs (Chapter 6). Each of these examples will be unpacked in greater detail throughout the book, demonstrating how cognitive insights can illuminate the aesthetic strategies and audience experiences central to animation poetics. By integrating such research, this book situates animation poetics within an interdisciplinary dialogue that accounts for the universal yet contextually nuanced ways in which audiences engage with animated media.
Broadly speaking, this book aims to explore what a historical poetics of animation could entail. More specifically, it argues that established guidelines for good commercial animation practice are open to renegotiation. Whenever principles are devised to guarantee high quality, someone inevitably finds a way to subvert those principles, yet still produce work that fulfils their intended purpose. This dynamic is not limited to independent or experimental sectors, where low budgets allow for greater aesthetic risk-taking. Aesthetic disruptions have also made their way into the mainstream.
It paints a skewed picture to characterise the Disney studio as the looming monolith against which the rest of the animation industry responded, particularly given that they did so much experimentation and innovation themselves. But given their cultural weight in the world of animation, their creative rules have been held up as ‘orthodoxies’ (Wells 1998: 57), which became ripe for destabilisation. Graceful and fluid animated performances were generally held as an ideal until UPA, Zagreb and various anime studios developed visually engaging ways to use time-saving and cost-cutting techniques. Characters remaining on model (i.e. with consistent proportions) were held as an ideal until animators like Rod Scribner exploited the creative potential of having them go off-model. Clean lines around the characters were the norm until TV shows like Roobarb (1974) and Beavis and Butt-Head (1993–97) proved popular using wiggly lines. Background design with visual depth was held as an ideal until UPA freely embraced the inherent flatness of the movie screen. 3D computer animation was generally known for using detailed lighting and texture effects until Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse popularised the flattening effect of cel-shading. If an artist breaks given orthodoxies with control and intention, it can serve the artwork and lead to aesthetic innovation that goes on to develop new industry norms.
To be clear, the claim is not being made that there is no such thing as good and bad animation or that judgement is entirely subjective. While public opinion does not constitute a definitive appraisal, we can reasonably claim that there are problems with the animated movies Titanic: The Legend Goes On (2000), which received a rating of 1.5/10 on IMDb, and Foodfight! (2012), which received a rating of 1.3/10 on IMDb. Likewise, an ‘aggrieved public’ (Park 2019) responded negatively to the initial 3D computer-animated version of Sonic after the release of the first Sonic the Hedgehog (2020) movie trailer. Following the public reaction, Sonic was redesigned to remove his human teeth, wide-set eyes and elongated body. His furry fingers were replaced with gloves. We can point to artworks and aesthetic choices that are putatively considered good or bad, but this book is not designed to propose creative ideals to artists. Instead, it looks at what has been done in various contexts, and the contextual forces that put those creative choices in place.
In Aesthetic Evaluation and Film, Andrew Klevan offers a set of key criteria by which a film can be aesthetically evaluated (2018: 119–218). These criteria are equally relevant to animation as they are to live-action cinema. They include the discipline of constraint, the negotiation of convention, the determination of choices, the state of relationships and the employment of the medium.
The discipline of constraint refers to factors such as budgetary constraints, cultural constraints (e.g. censorship laws), technical constraints (the equipment used), temporal constraints (i.e. a tight deadline) or the constraints of the house style you work with, such as Pixar’s or Kyoto Animation’s. While constraints can be restrictive, they can also enhance aesthetic achievement by fostering creativity within set boundaries. The negotiation of convention broadly refers to a frequently used technique or content that is accepted as standard or typical in that tradition or genre. As already noted, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse achieved distinction by applying comic book-esque cel-shaded CG animation instead of using the more familiar lighting style and rendering that Pixar, DreamWorks and Blue Sky Studios have applied.
The determination of choices refers to an artist’s willingness to take creative risks. The viewer is conscious of the ever-present possibility of an aesthetic failure, and so they can get a thrill from seeing an artist approach the edge of collapse without tipping over. This dynamic is evident in shows such as Rick and Morty (2013–) and Smiling Friends (2022–2026), which regularly employ outlandish plotlines and peculiar character designs that push against conventional expectations. The state of relationships refers to the way in which the various elements, including visual design, performance, storytelling and music, integrate into a cohesive whole. Instead of focusing on isolated elements, this holistic approach helps in understanding the cumulative impact of the film’s parts. When the elements fit together effectively, this is known as ‘unity’ (Klevan 2018: 73). In practice, unity is usually associated with the director’s vision, but it is achieved through collaboration with heads of departments who coordinate animation, design, sound and narrative so the parts cohere.
Finally, employment of the medium refers to the ways in which an animation builds from its own specific properties. The cultural critic and film theorist Siegfried Kracauer argued that all art forms should focus on what they do best, what makes them most distinctive (1960: 89). The unique qualities of animation and its inherent affinities were noted before then. In 1936, the critic William Kozlenko commented that ‘the uniqueness of the animated cartoon lies in the fact that, of all film forms, it is the only one that has freed itself almost entirely from the restrictions of an oppressive reality’ (Kozlenko, quoted in Telotte 2010: 12). The influential filmmaker Sergei Eisenstein noted the inherent malleability of animation, what he called its ‘plasmatic’ qualities, in its ability to transcend the constraints of reality ([1941] 1986: 11). While Eisenstein used this term with reference to Disney’s Silly Symphonies, which ran from 1929 to 1939, plasmaticness was embraced immediately in the medium, from Émile Cohl’s morphing stream-of-consciousness short Fantasmagorie (1908) to the earliest Felix the Cat cartoons, in which the titular cat would transform his tail, word balloons and parts of the scenery into props. Exaggeration, stylisation and hyperbole have since been cheerfully embraced in studio animation’s myriad forms, from the rubber-hose-era Fleischer cartoons of the late 1920s and early 1930s, to Bob Clampett and Tex Avery’s seven-minute theatrical shorts of the 1940s and 1950s, to the intense and extravagant anime television shows like Mob Psycho 100 (2016–22).
Ren and Stimpy (1991–96) offers a vivid example of animation embracing its medium-specific possibilities. In the pilot episode ‘Big House Blues’, Ren realises he is in mortal danger: his body stretches and contorts, the background dissolves into a swirling vortex and a siren begins to blare (Fig. 0.1). These distortions bear minimal resemblance to the physiological signs of a panic attack, yet they capture its felt intensity with immediacy and force. The unique freedoms of animation as a medium are on full display.

Kaj Pindal comments, ‘animation that duplicates reality is like driving a jet plane around a parking lot’ (quoted in Beiman 2012: 9). Likewise, Siegfried Kracauer argued that Disney’s pursuit of stability, solidity and three-dimensional space ‘stifles the draftsman’s imagination’ (1960: 90). He explains:
Walt Disney’s increasing attempts to express fantasy in realistic terms are aesthetically questionable precisely because they comply with the cinematic approach . . . There is a growing tendency toward camera-reality in his later full length films. Peopled with the counterparts of real landscapes and real human beings, they are not so much ‘drawings brought to life’ as life reproduced in drawings. (Ibid.: 89–90)
For Kracauer, animators not only have the freedom but also the obligation to abandon the constraints of the physical world, a principle he believed Disney violated (ibid.: 90). Paul Wells similarly argued that Disney was guilty of ‘undermining the distinctive aspects of animation itself’, moving ‘further away from the plasmatic flexibility of many of the early Silly Symphonies, and coerc[ing] the animated form into a neo-realist practice’ (1998: 23).
This way of thinking is intuitively compelling, but as Farzaneh Yazdandoost (2026) observes, medium-specific approaches carry a recurrent risk: that a medium is implicitly reduced to a single defining property, which then comes to stand in for the medium as a whole. In the case of animation, this can take the form of emphasising exaggeration over restraint, plasmaticness over physical plausibility, or stylisation over realism. Each of these aspects captures something distinct about animated techniques, traditions, or historical circumstances, but becomes reductive when treated as exhaustively descriptive of animation as a medium.
From this perspective, Poetics of Animation does not advance a polemical claim that animation should always foreground what is unique to it. Instead, distinctions between animation and other media function as a framing device: a way of sharpening analysis, comparison and evaluation across different contexts, techniques and historical moments. Medium specificity, as it is used throughout this book, operates less as a rule to be obeyed than as an analytical lens, helping to clarify how animated works negotiate their own possibilities rather than prescribing what animation ought to be.
This resistance to prescriptive accounts of animation is also evident in Stephen Rowley’s defence of Disney’s approach, which stresses ‘the artistry involved in overcoming the obstacles to a realistic effect in animation’ (2006). During the 1930s, Disney shifted towards a more naturalistic style, distinct from the cartoon elasticity of the early Silly Symphonies, culminating in the sophisticated character animation and pictorial depth of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, a vision that required the combined talents of many accomplished artists. Achieving this degree of naturalism within the constraints of hand-drawn animation demanded sustained technical innovation, intensive labour and the coordinated problem-solving of large creative teams, and it is on these grounds that Rowley argues the work merits legitimate aesthetic consideration.
Rowley’s emphasis on Disney’s pursuit of naturalism is all the more relevant when comparing the 1994 and 2019 versions of The Lion King. The cel-animated original was both a critical and commercial success, while the near-photorealistic 3D remake was a box office hit, but was also panned as an ‘artless . . . slavish reproduction’ of the physical world, in which ‘its lions look too real for their own good’ (Rivera 2019). Pushed further in the remake, Disney’s longstanding quest for realism thus elicited a mixed response. However, even where the remake is criticised for its limited expressive elasticity, its artistry may still be apprehended through what Carl Plantinga terms ‘artefact emotions’. These are emotional responses directed not at the fictional events or characters, but at the film as a constructed artefact, encompassing reactions such as fascination with production design, admiration for technical accomplishment, or appreciation of the scale and complexity of the labour involved (Plantinga, 2009: 89). In this respect, Plantinga’s point complements Rowley’s defence: the remake may lack expressive elasticity, but it can still elicit appreciation for the sheer difficulty of the naturalistic effects it realises.
While realism and stylisation will be recurring topics in this book, a poetics of animation is designed to explore in more general terms how constraints, technologies and conventions shape style across diverse cases. A brief case study of The Simpsons (1989–) illustrates this broader method in action, showing how a single series can serve as a laboratory for poetics by revealing the interplay between production conditions and aesthetic outcomes.
The Simpsons has now been on the air for over thirty-five years. When the shorts first appeared on The Tracey Ullman Show (1987–90), they were created by Matt Groening and a small animation team of three people: Bill Kopp, Wes Archer and David Silverman (Pipkin, quoted in Ortved 2009: 54). Pressed for time and resources, the animators traced directly over Groening’s original drawings. Because Groening’s experience lay in comic strips rather than animation, his drawings translated awkwardly into the medium. The resulting shorts featured sharper, more irregular lines than conventional studio work, and character proportions sometimes shifted noticeably from shot to shot. These early limitations gave the shorts their distinctive rough quality, though the style would soon be refined as the series developed.
When The Simpsons was expanded into a half-hour series after the success of the Tracey Ullman Show shorts, Gracie Films contracted the animation to the small Hollywood studio Klasky-Csupo (Ortved 2009: 39). Klasky-Csupo handled storyboards, layouts and designs, while the labour-intensive frame-by-frame animation was subcontracted to studios in South Korea (ibid.: 63). Compared to the crude and irregular Ullman-era drawings, production values improved markedly: timing became smoother, backgrounds more elaborate, proportions more consistent, and under the guidance of animators like David Silverman, the characters were refined to be more palatable and easier to rotate in space (ibid.: 75). Since it was made for television, budgets were still tighter than feature film production and classic theatrical shorts, which is why movement on The Simpsons wasn’t as fluid as that of Disney characters, or as elastic as that of the characters from the original Warner Bros. shorts. The Simpsons also had a smaller range of movements and used ‘limited’ techniques (discussed in Chapter 1) such as cycles, sectioning, heavy dialogue and cel banks.
In its early years, The Simpsons was animated on film but broadcast in standard definition from videotape masters, which reduced colour fidelity compared with the original cels (Bernstein 1992). With Season 14 (2002–3), the production switched to a fully digital ink-and-paint pipeline, making colour correction easier. Although episodes were still delivered in standard definition, the new workflow improved consistency and brought broadcast presentation closer to what artists saw during production (Asperschlager 2011). Digital compositing now allowed an unlimited number of layers, enabling more complex sequences such as Homer’s multiplying clones in ‘Treehouse of Horror XIII’ (2002) (Fig. 0.2). As Supervising Director David Silverman noted, cel animation limited the number of stacked layers because each additional cel reduced image clarity, but digital tools removed this restriction (quoted in Insider 2021).
Developing The Simpsons Movie (2007) presented a new set of challenges since it was made in high definition (HD). While they remained close to the original colour palette, colour tones were more varied than in the TV show. Shadows were used more liberally, giving a greater sense of visual depth. Background designs were also richer in detail, which proved challenging. Al Jean explains, ‘You really have to be much more careful that backgrounds don’t look shoddy in one spot. There’s so much information in the frame’ (Jean, quoted in Insider 2021). A note on the fridge with a scribble on it was acceptable in SD, but didn’t work in HD. The movie was also made in widescreen (from 4:3 to 16:9), giving the creators new considerations about shot composition and containing action in a wider shot.
Two years after the movie was released, the TV show transitioned to HD with the episode ‘Take My Life, Please’ (Season 20, episode 10). Many of the principles developed for the movie were now being used on television. This meant they couldn’t recycle shots from earlier seasons, and their library of backgrounds had to be remade. The budget also became a constraint, given that the show wasn’t as popular as it was during its heyday. Movements were notably stiffer due to reduced funds and getting to grips with new production methods. In the original version of the opening sequence, Marge’s hair whips around when she turns her head at the supermarket checkout, and her paper bag bounces. In the revamp, both movements are heavily reduced. As the software developed and the artists became better acquainted with digital 2D animation, movements became increasingly fluid. As such, there is a noticeable difference in character fluidity between Seasons 20 and 30.

This short case study illustrates how context, budget and technological change have shaped The Simpsons across its thirty-five-plus-year history. Motion, colour and light, character design, compositing and visual depth have all shifted for specific contextual reasons, reminding us that even familiar, ‘cartoonish’ television requires a labyrinth of aesthetic decisions made by teams of specialists. A poetics of animation helps us register those choices more consciously, tracing not only what appears on-screen but also the industrial and creative conditions that brought them into being.
This book combines synthesis and original intervention. Chapters 2, 3 and 5 map key frameworks, historical developments and debates that have shaped animation practice and scholarship. These chapters provide analytical surveys that illustrate the distinctions between a poetics of animation and live-action cinema, contextualising existing knowledge and highlighting areas of ongoing inquiry. Chapters 4 and 6 are more explicitly interventionist, introducing new terminology and conceptual models to describe aesthetic strategies that have received little sustained analysis. Together, these analyses build a poetics of animation that consolidates established ideas while also advancing new frameworks for understanding animated form and style.
Chapters 1 to 4 discuss movement and performance. Motion is introduced as the medium’s defining essence, contrasting fabricated movement with live action’s recorded reality. Chapter 1 maps early practices, outlines the continuum between full and limited animation and considers timing, smears, cycles and anime’s sakuga as methods of navigating animated movement. The next chapter considers the legacy of the Twelve Principles, tracing their influence while suggesting that they are best treated as adaptable guidelines rather than fixed rules. Performance is then explored historically and theoretically, beginning with Winsor McCay’s Gertie the Dinosaur and extending through the conventions developed at Disney and Warner Bros., to the nuanced acting styles of contemporary computer graphics. Debates about personality, empathy and believability are framed through both craft traditions and theories of acting. A new typology of performance follows, proposing four modes – full, limited, axial and microgestural – showing that different contexts, technologies and aesthetics enable multiple valid approaches to animated acting.
Chapters 5 to 7 turn to design. The first of these traces the historical evolution of character design in American studios, from early comic-strip influences to Disney’s anatomical drive, UPA’s modernist flatness, toy-driven designs of the 1980s and beyond, highlighting how readability, branding and demographics shaped iconic figures. The following chapter develops the expressive principles of design, exploring how realism and stylisation are balanced, how coding through shape, colour, line and costume communicates character, and how notions of visual appeal are constructed or subverted in different contexts. Mise-en-scène is then explored through backgrounds, props, settings and lighting, with attention to their narrative and emotional functions. Layout artists, who guide the viewer’s eye by determining the positioning of characters, backgrounds and camera angles, are also discussed.
Chapter 8 addresses cinematography. It defines the ‘virtual camera’ of animation and charts its evolution from static tableaux to multiplane effects, simulated tilts and the free mobility of 3D digital environments. The chapter considers how framing, movement, aspect ratio, depth cues, lighting and colour work to both clarify action and establish mood. In doing so, it illustrates how cinematography in animation adapts techniques from live action while exploiting freedoms unique to the animated medium.
Chapters 9 and 10 move away from the visual dimensions of animation but still focus on its distinctive aesthetics. Storytelling is explored through both classical frameworks such as the three-act structure, the Hero’s Journey and Snyder’s Beat Sheet, as well as alternative modes including drifting protagonists, puzzle films, network narratives, block construction and the Japanese form kishōtenketsu. Sound is examined as an equally vital component, encompassing voice, music, effects and atmospheres, with four modes of cartoon sound design proposed: syncretic, zip-crash, functional and poetic authentication. Together, these two chapters illustrate how animation’s aesthetic possibilities extend beyond the image, shaping audience experience through narrative form and sonic design.
The concluding chapter consolidates the book’s central interventions while emphasising poetics as an open-ended framework rather than a fixed doctrine. It revisits the themes of conventions as evolving, constraints as engines of style, and the value of a medium-specific poetics, before considering the typologies and vocabulary developed across the chapters as tools for both scholarship and practice. The chapter also points outwards, sketching future research agendas that include broadening the cultural corpus beyond American and Japanese examples and addressing aspects of the production pipeline, such as editing, storyboarding and VFX, that have not been treated in detail here. It closes by affirming poetics as a way of sharpening attentiveness to the problem–solution ecology of animation, offering a shared vocabulary to explain, appreciate and evaluate the art form while leaving space for further refinement.
